Sweet wood ~ that’s a long-time nickname for Licorice Root, a plant prized for the sweetness stored in its underground roots. Native to parts of southern Europe and western Asia, it has also been grown more widely for centuries, and Licorice appears in historical records from ancient Egypt and Assyria. Above ground, the plant carries soft green leaflets and small pea-like blossoms that hint at its place in the legume family.
Powerfully sweet, the infusion is naturally rich and rounded, with a faint anise-like edge that comes forward as it steeps. The liquor tends to be amber to brown, and the sweetness lingers on the palate, leaving a smooth, slightly coating finish.
