Woodland native, this beauty is at home in the rich, shaded forests of eastern North America. It favors moisture-holding soil and steady canopy cover ~ popping candle-like flower stalks above other ground cover. It’s commonly wildcrafted in parts of the Appalachians. It takes years to build an underground root structure before throwing energy into top growth.
The flowers have a pungent scent, and the old genus name Cimicifuga comes from Latin for driving away bugs ~ the reason you’ll see it called bugbane. The word cohosh is generally traced to an Algonquian-derived term connected to rough, reflecting the plant’s gnarly underground parts. Other common names for this incredible plant include Black Snakeroot, Bugbane, and Rattleroot.
