Hardy by design ~ this shrub is native to cool forest country from the Russian Far East through parts of China, Korea, and Japan. It tends to live low in mixed woods where the light comes in fragments. Slow-growing and compact, it’s valued horticulturally for its toughness in cold climates. You’ll also see it called Siberian ginseng, a common nickname even though it isn’t a true ginseng and doesn’t belong to the Panax genus. In Traditional Chinese contexts it’s known as Ciwujia; in Korean contexts, Gasiogapi.
When the root is simmered as a decoction, the cup runs deep amber with an earthy, woody backbone and a mild, clean bitterness ~ smooth, steady, and built for slow attention.
