Fruity Island Pepper ~ Allspice is not a blend of different spices (as one would expect from the name) ~ it’s the dried, unripe berry of the allspice tree ~ a small evergreen tree native to the central American tropics. The berries are harvested while gr een, then dried until deep brown and finely ground. Their aroma recalls Cinnamon, Clove, Nutmeg, and Black Pepper at once, with warm sweetness, woody depth, and a soft peppery finish.

Allspice is native to the Caribbean, southern Mexico and Central America. When the Spanish arrived in the new world, they mistook allspice berries for peppercorns due to their appearance and peppery aroma, even calling it Pimenta (Pepper) when they first came across it. These encounters helped spread Allspice’s acclaim worldwide.

In the Victorian era, young Allspice trees were heavily cut for fashionable walking sticks and umbrella handles. The trade pushed the tree toward serious decline, and Jamaica restricted sapling exports in 1882. The tree population has since increased but it is still recovering.

Known as Pimento in Jamaica, Allspice has long been central to Caribbean cuisine, where its berries, leaves, and aromatic wood have helped season and smoke food. It is also one of the defining spices in Jamaican jerk recipes, working alongside ingredients such as Thyme, Scotch bonnet pepper, Garlic, and green onion to create jerk’s unmistakable warmth and depth. Its layered character later found a place in kitchens far beyond the region, appearing in stews, rice dishes, marinades, pickles, baked fruit, and spice cakes ~ especially a good gingerbread!

Use a light hand with this spice because a little goes a long way. We like to use it everywhere ~ such as in lentils, squash, Caribbean style rice and peas, tomato dishes, marinades, oatmeal, baked fruit, and cakes. It’s especially at home in jerk-inspired seasoning blends, where its woody sweetness rounds out herbs, brings satisfaction to a dish, and adds subtle heat.

Organic Allspice (Pimenta dioica)

Directions

How to make Island Roasted Sweet Potatoes...

Toss 4 cups of cubed sweet potato with one tablespoon of olive oil, half a teaspoon of ground Allspice, half a teaspoon of dried Thyme, a small pinch of salt, and a little Black Pepper. We like pulling all the ingredients in an old bread bag and having our kids shake it vigorously to make mixing and cleanup easy.

Spread the pieces across a baking sheet with waxed paper liner, or a heavy roasting pan (we love our cast iron pans for this recipe).

Roast in the oven or a closed barbeque at 220°C (430°F) for 25 to 30 minutes, turning once, until tender with browned, caramelized edges. The browned bits are the best part!

Garnish with a squeeze of lime and a scattering of sliced green onion.

Serve with rice and peas, leafy greens, grilled veggies or barbequed jerk chicken.

Excellent as a salad topper, along with rice and peas, or barbequed jerk chicken.
