A blue-green algae, spirulina was found in abundance at Lake Texcoco, Mexico. It was a food source for the Aztecs and other Mesoamericans until the 16th century, when the surrounding lakes were drained for agricultural purposes. Its rich nutritional value garners so much interest that presently NASA is investigating its potential as a future food source in space.
