Myths state that Yarrow's Latin name Achillea is derived from Achilles, the legendary Spartan warrior who was shown its many uses by Chiron the Centaur. It was used to treat his wounded soldiers during the Trojan War, earning the alternate name 'Solder's Woundwort'. This perennial grows about 3 feet high with small white flowers in flat, daisy-llink clusters up to a foot across which flower from summer to autumn. Yarrow makes an earthy, somewhat bitter, slightly astringent tea and should be made with hot (not boiling) water. It has some history of use as tincture and essential oil.
