Description
This European native has been naturalized to North America where it can be found in many pastures and fields. It grows 30-60 cm tall and its dark leaves show tiny holes when held up to the light - hence it's species name of performatum. It's recognizable by its yellow flowers appearing from June to August and tends to re-seed itself for years.
This herb has been in use since the Middle Ages. It was used by Indigenous tribes as a food source when dried and powdered, to make dyes, and as an additive to flower to improve the quality of bread. We suggest making a tea or a rise like our grandmothers would have.
