Description
Elder is a legendary tree, long regarded with wonder and respect. In folklore it was said to stand between worlds, its white blossoms and dark berries bridging the realms of earth and sky. In the early Middle Ages, Emperor Charlemagne decreed that Elder be planted in every imperial garden (8th century), ensuring its presence throughout Europe. Medieval herbalists celebrated the tree for its many uses among country folk, and its place beside cottages and hedgerows made it a familiar guardian of the seasons.
Each spring, the Elder bursts into creamy-white flowers that lend a delicate, floral sweetness to cordials and teas ~ bright and fragrant, like the warmth of late May captured in a cup.
